I had to boot into recovery mode and clear the path in various ways. I can&#8217;t remember exactly what I did but it involved wiping existing video drivers so I could even boot into Ubuntu 2D.<\/p>\n<p>Had to get into recovery mode and purge the existing drivers. IIRC the file system was treated as being read-only and I had to remount as step 1 (nice and quick) before I could successfully make the other changes from root.<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia* fglrx*<\/code><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ubuntuforums.org\/showthread.php?t=1857588&#038;page=2\">[SOLVED] Going back to 10.10, Oneiric is a bust for me<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I probably wiped \/etc\/X11\/xorg.conf as well.<\/p>\n<p>Once into Ubuntu 2D I was able to add proprietary drivers for nVidia and some combination worked and I was able to get Unity 3D working.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Booting into correct system<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Want  grub (grub2) to load my main system, not the test version I put in a new partition:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo grub-install \/dev\/sda<\/code><\/p>\n<p>To change other grub settings edit \/etc\/boot\/grub:<\/p>\n<p>sudo gedit \/etc\/boot\/grub<\/p>\n<p>then edit the line &#8211;<br \/>\nGRUB_DEFAULT=0<br \/>\nto<br \/>\nGRUB_DEFAULT=4<\/p>\n<p>save the file, then run<br \/>\n&#8220;sudo update-grub&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.linuxquestions.org\/questions\/linux-software-2\/changing-default-os-in-grub2-765011\/<\/p>\n<p><strong>Re-ordering icons on launcher<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Unity 3D just drag them to the right then up or down and back in. In Unity 2D, hold for two seconds, then you can drag them around (http:\/\/ubuntuforums.org\/showthread.php?t=1709136).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Removing overlay scroll bars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><code>sudo apt-get remove overlay-scrollbar liboverlay-scrollbar-0.1-0<\/code><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webupd8.org\/2011\/04\/things-to-tweak-fix-after-installing.html\">Things To Tweak \/ Fix After Installing Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adding the system load indicator<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webupd8.org\/2011\/05\/network-memory-and-cpu-usage-indicator.html\">Network, Memory And CPU Usage Indicator For Ubuntu: System Load Indicator<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adding a memory load indicator (useful when running a virtual OS at same time)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webupd8.org\/2011\/04\/things-to-tweak-fix-after-installing.html\">Things To Tweak \/ Fix After Installing Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal<\/a><\/p>\n<p><code>Restore debugging for Netbeans<\/code><\/p>\n<p><code>sudo gedit \/etc\/php5\/apache2\/php.ini<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Find php.ini using phpinfo() then edit it thus:<\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\nxdebug.remote_enable=1<br \/>\nxdebug.remote_handler=dbgp<br \/>\nxdebug.remote_mode=req<br \/>\nxdebug.remote_host=localhost<br \/>\nxdebug.remote_port=9000<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Next<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo gedit \/etc\/apache2\/apache2.conf<\/code><\/p>\n<p><code>ServerRoot \"\/etc\/apache2\"<br \/>\nServerName localhost<\/code><\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"http:\/\/p-s.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=627\">Xdebug restored on Lucid for Netbeans<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p><code>sudo \/etc\/init.d\/apache2 stop<\/p>\n<p>sudo \/etc\/init.d\/apache2 start<\/p>\n<p>sudo gedit \/etc\/php5\/conf.d\/xdebug.ini<\/code><\/p>\n<p>xdebug.ini was correct:<\/p>\n<p><code>zend_extension=\/usr\/lib\/php5\/20090626+lfs\/xdebug.so<\/code><\/p>\n<p>This folder did exist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SQLyog problems <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Managed to get the automated synchronisation working by deleting ~\/.wine, reinstalling WINE, and reinstalling SQLyog (having saved<\/p>\n<p>but the main system was flaky and crashed when displaying the results of a connection (amongst other things). The following gave a clue that WINE was involved: <a href=\" https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/unity\/+bug\/755406\">Mouse offset problem when using a WINE application maximized <\/a>Downgraded from WINE 1.3 to 1.2 and the problems went away.<\/p>\n<p>Also had to handle this when upgraded SQLyog: wine: cannot find L&#8221;C:\\\\windows\\\\system32\\\\plugplay.exe&#8221;. Fixed by making a copy of system.reg and wiping section on plugplay.<\/p>\n<p>Adding an icon to the launcher involved the solution from <a href=\"http:\/\/askubuntu.com\/questions\/13758\/how-can-i-edit-create-new-launcher-items-in-unity-by-hand\">How can I edit\/create new launcher items in Unity by hand?<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Right click your desktop<\/li>\n<li>Select Create Launcher&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Create the custom Launcher as you want to.<\/li>\n<li>Open your Home Folder.
