{"id":32,"date":"2008-08-28T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2008-08-27T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/p-s.co.nz\/wordpress\/?p=32"},"modified":"2008-08-28T10:30:00","modified_gmt":"2008-08-27T22:30:00","slug":"grub-menu-putting-windows-back-on-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/p-s.co.nz\/wordpress\/grub-menu-putting-windows-back-on-list\/","title":{"rendered":"GRUB Menu &#8211; Putting Windows Back on List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Problem &#8211; upgraded Ubuntu kernel and the GRUB menu no longer had a line for starting Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Solution tried: Opened menu.lst for editing using command:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo \/boot\/grub\/menu.lst<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and added the following section (+ reset default &#8211; NB zero-based so item 1 is 0 etc)<\/p>\n<p><code>title\t\tWindows 95\/98\/NT\/2000<br \/>\nroot\t\t(hd0,0)<br \/>\nmakeactive<br \/>\nchainloader\t+1<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Nope &#8211; hd0,0 not correct on the dual boot kids computer.<\/p>\n<p>OK ran the following command to see what partitions there were:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo fdisk -l<\/code><\/p>\n<p>(NB that is an L not an i)<\/p>\n<p>This returned something roughly like:<\/p>\n<p><code>\/dev\/sda2<br \/>\n\/dev\/sda3<br \/>\n\/dev\/sda4<br \/>\n\/dev\/sda5<\/code><\/p>\n<p>where the sda4 was the Windows partition.  So I changed (hd0,0) to (hd0,3) and dual booting worked again.<\/p>\n<p>And to prevent Ubuntu from wiping the Windows entry again I only put Windows under the Debian automagical line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Problem &#8211; upgraded Ubuntu kernel and the GRUB menu no longer had a line for starting Windows.
